Let this be a cautionary tale for everyone who hasn’t watched Avengers: Endgame — be sure to drink lots of water because you might get dehydrated from the tears you shed.
A 21-year-old university student in China required hospitalisation after she was sent into a 3-hour crying spell while watching the highly-anticipated movie.
“She started spasming”
The victim, Xiaoli, was watching the movie during the premiere on Wednesday (24 Apr) with her friends. While others were merely sobbing at a certain sad scene, Xiaoli was bawling her eyes out.
Even when the credits rolled, she could not stop crying. While leaving the cinema, Xiaoli felt a tightness in her chest and found it difficult to breathe. Suddenly, her limbs felt numb and she collapsed into a spasm, fists tightly clenched.
Her friends, frightened by her condition, quickly dialled emergency and she was rushed to the hospital.
Avengers gave her hyperventilation syndrome
The emergency room doctor who treated her, explained her condition as follows,
It turns out that her excessive crying either contributed to or coincided with a panic attack, which made her breathing very shallow.
Her excessive crying may have led to too much carbon dioxide being expelled from her lungs at a quickened pace. In these cases, where blood becomes extremely alkaline in a condition called respiratory alkalosis, would have the ability to cause seizures as the one Xiaoli experienced.
She wasn’t the only one crying
Critics who gave early reviews of Avengers: Endgame “couldn’t stop crying” themselves. But hopefully, their case didn’t end up in hospitalisation.

Just saw #AvengersEndgame. This tweet will have no spoilers. Instead, it’ll just be emotional gibberish. Thor in this movie is my mood rn. Also, it was so amazing I cried… many times. I will watch this movie so many times. I feel so fulfilled after a decade.

Imagine the best possible version of #AvengersEndgame and somehow the film still surpasses all expectations. I cried 5-6 times. It’s the most emotional, most epic, MCU film. A tribute to ten years of this universe and holy shit the great fan service in this movie. Soooo good.
