CHONGQING, CHINA – A group of Chinese researchers can now determine whether your blood type using a paper strip test in just 30 seconds instead of the 10 to 20 minutes typically required through conventional methods. The study, led by researchers from the Third Military Medical University in Chong Qing, China, was released on the Science Translational Medicine website on March 2017.
The blood test consists of a paper strip with antibodies and dye. When blood comes into contact with the antibodies on the strip; squares of colour, either teal or brown, appear. If the antigen is present, the square shows up as teal; otherwise, the square turns brown.
The test was experimented on 3,550 human blood samples and its accuracy was on par with that of other traditional methods of blood-testing.
The paper strip test is particularly useful for time-sensitive medical emergencies especially where blood transfusion is necessary. A malfunction in the immune system could end in fatality if doctors are not able to ascertain the blood type accurately.
